Man oh man it’s no fun to be down. It’s downright ugly and repulsive. Fact of the matter is, though, if you are walking around in a human body, you’ve got problems heading your way. So before I tell you the best way to get out of a Funk is first and foremost not to let yourself GET IN a funk, let’s talk about the reality that you may be there – feeling horrible, blah, blech…frustrated, annoyed, peeved and nasty and here’s what you can do about it.
- Notice it. Catch yourself feeling funked. You gain Power over your funk if you are aware when you are in or not in a funk. This is most of the battle right here.
- Ask yourself: “Do I really want to feel this way right now?” “Will it serve me?”
If yes: Sometimes you may be perfectly fine feeling grumpy, angry or upset, and you know what? That is perfectly okay! You see, we live in a society that favors escapism from our true emotions, or suppression. If you do that long enough, you’ll lose your identity where the outside world has more influence over who you are versus your inner world of truth, hope, happiness, and love. You’ll also conjure up some wicked diseases because of stockpiled emotional suppression. So be okay feeling horrible. It won’t last long if you continue reading and follow the suggestions. Mainly, if you are feeling horrible don’t be horrible to others. Own it, don’t ANGER dump your unhappiness on your kid, your spouse, or your dog. Just let it burn off. Imagine your funk on fire and burning off. Be with it and let it go, let it run its course.

- Don’t name it, ponder it, delve into it or dissect and reason with it. That is an endless cycle and rabbit hole that you don’t want to go down. It is self-perpetuating and endless. Got it? Just call it a funk and go about your day the best you can.
- After you’ve chosen to be with it and let it run its course without rationalizing with it and with others that are more than happy to share why they are funked too, you will find yourself feeling lighter and breathing deeper. The fog and the funk will lift.
If no: Then immediately acknowledge you are in a funk and take ownership that you have the power to lift yourself out of the funk-ness. Search for a better feeling thought. Seriously ask yourself, “What thoughts would help me feel better?” You will immediately have a good dose of them. Grab ahold of them as they come. You got it within you, I know you do. Write them down, repeat them and believe the positive thoughts about yourself. Take ownership of those thoughts!
Other helpful action steps:
- Look upon or listen to something that inspires you.
- Watch a funny movie.
- Ask for help or guidance by looking skyward to your higher power.
- Go for a walk and observe nature, the birds, wind in the trees and watch your perspective change.
You can do it. Move out of the funk and move forward.
